What We Believe...
God's Sovereignty: God is alone, there is no other. God alone is the foundation of all creation and has control over all things. All things are known to God. God's good will will be done according to God's purposes.
"In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God's image to live as one community." Book of Confessions, 10.3
Genesis 1:1-25, Luke 10:29-37
Humanity's Sin: In sin, humans claim mastery over their own lives, turn against God and their neighbors, and become exploiters and despoilers of the world. All humanity's virtue is infected by selfishness and hostility. All fall under God's judgement.
"No one is more subject to [God's judgement] than the person who assumes that he or she is guiltless before God or morally superior to others." BOC 9.13
Romans 3:23, 6:23
Salvation of Human Kind: We believe that we receive salvation by God's grace--as an undeserved GIFT. We cannot earn our salvation by any means for our works and righteousness are sin stained. Jesus Christ did not come into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Jesus' sacrifice defeated sin's punishment on a cross and won the victory over death in his resurrection. As children of God,we will be made like Jesus when Jesus returns or death take us.
"The eternal God, who by grace alone chose us in His son Christ Jesus before the foundation of the world was laid..." BOC 3.08
Who are we?
First Presbyterian Church is an open, welcoming community of seekers. As seekers, we search for three things:
Throughout our 150 years, we have diligently sought to know God. We take seriously the importance of our faith tradition while at the same time being open to new ideas God is teaching us. We do not shy away from the hard questions that dominate our society, but instead we openly explore them with honesty.
We believe God through Christ has shown us how to serve humanity. We strive to be a part of God's work in Harrison, Boone County and around the world. We know God is at work in the world and we pray for the vision and faith to be active in that work.
God loves all of humanity! As a community, we seek to be a place of hope and safety for all of God's children. From the newborn infant to those who have walked the earth for some time, we want tot be a place where worship is pure, service is encouraged, and family is promoted for everyone.
It is our hope that through this website,
YOU find your place to belong!
