“Worship is the heart of the church’s life and mission. In worship we return to the wellsprings of the faith and are engaged in community with God who calls us. We discover new relationships of love and peace with each other and are sent to minister in the world in the name of Christ.

Worship is of primary importance to our life as the people of God. It is the principal means by which the faith is formed within us and the most visible way the faith is expressed. Because everything the church is and does flows from its worship, liturgical reform is a major concern confronting our church today.”

-The Service for the Lord’s Day-Supplemental Liturgical Resource-1, WJ/K, Louisville, KY.

What we do in worship shapes our faith and our theology. What we believe about God, ourselves, our faith, our mission and the way we live in the world is all formed in worship. It is the primary place where our members and guest come to know how we, as Presbyterians, understand and practice our faith.

Therefore, what we do in worship and the way we do it is the most important part of our weekly practice of faith. Our congregation is dedicated to practice and reflection. In classes and informal gatherings we discuss the theology behind each movement of worship and ways the liturgy helps us engage and understand better how we live as disciples of Christ each and every day. We are intentional about being aware of how we are shaped by God as we create space for the Spirit to dance through our actions and words in worship. This is true not only for Sunday services but also for daily prayer.

Sacramental Practice and the Sacramental Study Report

The worship at First Presbyterian Church is shaped by the ancient ecumenical liturgy of the Church throughout history and our Reformed theology. The Sacramental Study Report “Invitation to Christ” has guided our practice and reflection. This report was received by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. and all churches in the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. have been asked to participate in five practices:

1) Set the font in full view of the congregation.

2) Open the font and fill it with water on every Lord’s Day.

3) Set cup and plate on the Lord’s Table on every Lord’s Day.

4) Lead appropriate parts of weekly worship from the font and from the table.

5) Increase the number of Sundays on which the Lord’s Supper is celebrated.
